Wedding photography

I am shooting a wedding on October 1st. It is outside at a lake. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. This will be my first wedding and I am not charging the couple for it. I am just doing it as a gift for them and experience for me.

Pictures that can show emotion are key. Get them to look at each other...get the mothers to look at the new couple...and of course, get the kissing shot. They will look back on this day and remember what their feelings were because of your shots.

Watch to see what's in the background. A great shot of the couple can be spoiled if there are weird things or strange people in the background.

Be careful about backlighting. People can look too dark against the brightness of the lake's reflected light. Take that into consideration when shooting.

If you don't know the families well, find out who the important family members and closest friends are and be sure to get some candid shots of them.

Do the traditional shots of bride and groom, bride with her parents, groom with his parents, flower girl and ring bearer.

Some great pictures of just the cake or the gift table or some unique decorations and flower arrangements are nice mementos. Take one of the bride's bouquet or the bride's veil.

How about a shot of the rings?

Get rid of any pictures that don't show the bride and groom at their best.

If the wedding is at sundown, get a nice shot of the bride and groom against the sunset.
