How long do photo copyrights last?

My parents had their wedding photos taken 50 years ago but the company that took them is no longer in business can I copy the pictures?

Usually when you receive wedding or personal photos, you receive all rights to them. When you view samples you may be told you can't take them, or they may be watermarked, but once you pay in full they are legally yours.

Based on the age, as well, I wouldn't worry. Copy away!

Legally, the copyright laws in the United States releases photos or documents after January 1, 1923, although this is not true for all countries. In your case, the photographs were legally purchased by the wedding couple, and I would consider them the owner of the photos or those they passed them down to--however, I am not a legal authority on this. Since the company has dissolved, I doubt very much there would be any recourse.
