How can I get copies of my wedding photos? My photos are slowly being damaged. The photographer that took our pictures 19 years ago is dead. We do not know how to get copies of our photos. I don't want to lose the memories. He committed suicide about 1 year after our wedding. What can we do? |

With your wedding having been 19 years ago...he would obviously not have been using a digital camera, so the only originals of the photos are in the negatives. If he died 18 years ago, unfortunately the original negatives have probably been disposed of, or are damaged themselves if someone didn't take the initiative to store them properly, which seems unlikely.
Before any more damage occurs to the prints you still have, scan them in! Your best bet is to make a digital file, if you don't have a scanner, take them to a nearby Wal-Mart or photo processing store. They will have a scanner you can use, and you can buy a CD of your images for a very low price. This way, you can keep them on your home computer, or make new prints of them if anything happens to the old ones.
If they are really badly damaged already, find someone who is handy in Photoshop. These scanned in images can be retouched to the point where they are surprisingly close to the original. If you don't know someone, you can find these types of services online, but expect to pay. This process is time consuming and takes a great deal of skill if you want it done well.

What CMarie said is correct. You will need to have them scanned and put on your computer in a digital format. What you can do nowadays is after those pictures are in a digital format (picture on the computer) you can have a wedding photo book done. Basically this is a hardcover book but with your wedding photos beautifully laid out. It's really good and when it is printed it's just like any other book you buy in a bookstore. I think that's a great way or further preserving your photos - it's printed on a good quality paper.
If you are having problems organizing to get your photos scanned don't be afraid to ask someone for help - this is your memories we are talking about - it's important. What you can also do is take your photos in to a photo shop and ask them what they can recommend for you to do. Some options might be pretty expensive so find out first all the details and then decide. Good luck!
